Barbara Pollack is an arts writer and curator with a focus on artists responding to socio-political crises. She has written about contemporary art for such publications as the Village Voice, Vanity Fair, the New York Times, Art in America, Artnet, Ocula, Ursula and many others.
Considered a leading expert on Chinese contemporary art, Pollack has published books, monographs and essays focusing on this field. She has consistently curated shows at museums and galleries, in the US and China, including Mirror Image: A New Chinese Identity at Asia Society Museum New York in 2022 and the groundbreaking, My Generation: Young Chinese Artists, co-presented at the Tampa Museum of Art in 2014 and MFA St. Petersburg in 2014. Based on her research in this field, she received two grants from Asian Cultural Council and the prestigious Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation arts writers grant.
Pollack is also is the co-founder and co-director of Art at a Time Like This Inc., a 501c3 arts organization that provides platforms for free expression for a global range of artists. Launched on March 17th, 2020, ATLT achieved in three months over 200,000 views in more than 100 countries with worldwide press coverage. Now celebrating five years, ATLT has launched 16 onine exhibitions, 6 public art projects, the Dangerous Art, Endangered Artists Summit in 2024 and most recently, DON’T LOOK NOW: A Defense of Free Expression, a gallery show featuring artists targeted for censorship in the US.
Pollack received her BA, magna cum laude, Brandeis University in 1978 and JD from Northeastern University School of Law, 1982. She practiced law for two years before quitting to become studio assistant for Faith Ringgold in 1986 and director of communications for Franklin Furnace from 1988 to 1992. Additionally, Pollack is an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and frequently lectures on contemporary art at universities and museums throughout the United States and Asia.
